IPV - Induced Piping Vibration and Fatigue

Overview

Piping vibration induced fatigue and failures have been recognised in industry as an issue for decades. Despite this, most standards and guidelines (e.g. Piping code ASME B31.3, RBI API-580) provide little detail on how to mitigate vibration risks.

While it’s possible to design a system that checks out according to design codes, it is still possible for it to be at risk of failure with potential catastrophic consequences. Facilities today are under pressure to deliver higher production, with leaner designs, and less margin for error.

This course is aimed at raising awareness of the types of piping vibration and fatigue issues, and how they can be managed through the project lifecycle. Through a series of practical case studies, attendees will learn about:

  • how vibration related issues arise in piping systems
  • root causes, risk levels and determining suitable corrective actions
  • the complexity involved with piping vibration, and the common pitfalls that catch most people out.

Discussions will cover common causes of piping vibration, current screening and assessment methods as well as their uses and limitations. Measurement of piping vibration and which techniques are applicable will also be covered.

An overview of how regulators such as NOPSEMA perceive piping vibration and how vibration related risks can be demonstrated to be reduced to ALARP is included in the course.
